ASEAN Expert Group on Sustainable Land Transport (EGSLT) Launched

The Expert Group on Sustainable Land Transport (EGSLT) was created as an ad-hoc working group under the ASEAN Land Transport Working Group (LTWG).

The 1st meeting of the EGSLT was hosted by Malaysia attended by EGSLT members from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, ASEAN Secretariat with the support of GIZ’s TCC project. The ASEAN Transport Strategic Plan 2016-2025 / Kuala Lumpur Transport Strategic Plan (KLTSP) has specific goals to boost the connectivity within the ASEAN region and features also a chapter on sustainable transport.

The EGSLT focused on driving forward the implementation of Sustainable Transport Goals under the KLTSP at the regional level, which include the development of a regional strategy on sustainable land transport, fuel economy, sustainable transport indicators, green freight and logistics, and training and capacity building. These activities are part of TCC’s support of ASEAN member states in implementing the KLTSP. It is foreseen that the EGSLT shall be the consultative body to discuss sustainable transport issues in ASEAN.

About the Project

The GIZ Project ‘Energy Efficiency and Climate Change Mitigation in the Land Transport Sector in the ASEAN region’ (Transport and Climate Change (TCC) www.TransportandClimateChange.org) aims in turn to develop strategies and action plans for more sustainable transport. As presented to the ASEAN Land Transport Working group, TCC’s regional activities are in the area of fuel efficiency, strategy development, green freight, and Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions in the transport sector. At the national level the project supports relevant transport and environment government bodies in the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia, for the development of national action plans and improvement of policy monitoring systems. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
