GIZ’s bioenergy (BEM) project organised two successive events on 17-18 November 2022 in Ho Chi Minh City on promoting South-South cooperation in Viet Nam’s bioenergy development and switching coal-fired to biomass boilers at local textile factories.

The former focused on fostering networks among academics, project developers, suppliers of biomass materials and technologies, as well as other commercial companies in the field. Among activities of the ‘Climate Protection through Sustainable Bioenergy Markets in Viet Nam’ (BEM) project, the event would support the exchange of technologies and knowledge on bioenergy, the finding of barriers and cooperation opportunities and the promotion of technology transition and South-South cooperation.

At the latter, the participants shared experiences and options for reducing carbon footprint of international brands’ supply chain at manufacturer level. They discussed technical options to convert fossil fuel-based to biomass boilers at textile factories in the country, evaluated the market and supply chain of biomass feedstocks and shared best practices on usage of biomass boilers for climate change action. They also talked about challenges and opportunities to replace coal with the resource at those factories.

The South-South cooperation is an enhanced solution to connect developing countries in the Southern hemisphere that have similar challenges and opportunities, by sharing knowledge, skills, expertise and resources to meet their development goals through effective coordinated efforts.

The BEM project is implemented by GIZ and the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority of Viet Nam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
