On November 4, 2008, the Government of India designated the River Ganga as the National River. This pivotal decision underscored the nation’s dedication to environmental conservation. Coinciding with this declaration, the Ganga Utsav was launched, marking an annual celebration conceptualized by ‘Support to Ganga Rejuvenation’ project in collaboration with the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). Over the years, Ganga Utsav has evolved significantly, and this year, it was commemorated across all Ganga States, culminating in exuberant festivities at Chandi Ghat, Haridwar.
The celebrations featured an array of engaging and informative activities that appealed to diverse audiences.
Key Highlights:
Technical Sessions: The SGR Project participated three impactful technical discussions that took place at Chandi Ghat, Haridwar centered on:
- Treated Water Reuse in India: Policy to Practice
- Citizen-led Urban River Management
- International Cooperation for River Rejuvenation
These sessions stimulated meaningful conversations among citizens, students, and environmental advocates, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Exhibition and Children’s Area: A focal point for information exchange, this area showcased essential resources curated by the project. It included interactive activities such as a “Snakes and Ladders” game, engaging both children and adults in a playful learning environment. Additionally, short videos on River Basin Management and the District Ganga Planning process enriched the participants’ understanding and experience.
The exhibition drew attention from notable figures, including Mr. Raj Bhushan Chaudhary, Hon’ble State Minister of Jal Shakti, further highlighting the initiative’s significance. The interactive activities not only captivated young participants but also fostered a collective awareness among adults regarding the vital importance of water resource preservation.
The project also participated in similar celebrations that took place in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
