The diploma course is currently underway.

With the financial support of German development cooperation, GIZ Pakistan along with Institute of Management Sciences (IMSciences)/Center for Water Informatics and Climate Resilience (CWC) has developed a cadre of professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to tackle complex climate challenges. In response to the challenge of insufficient regional-specific training programs, a shortage of human resources dedicated to climate action, and an increasing need for practical solutions, CWC has developed a tailored six-month climate governance and climate-sensitive diploma course.  This measure was instrumental in addressing the critical gap by developing a skilled/technical workforce to address climate change issues for various government departments in KP, fostering a new cohort of dedicated professionals committed to effective climate action. Upon completion of the diploma course, graduates emerged as a highly skilled and motivated workforce, well-prepared to confront the multifaceted challenges of climate change. They were positioned to become champions of sustainable practices and climate resilience within their respective fields.

02 Practical Session During Diploma Course in Progress

The course was structured over two semesters, comprising six modules that covers the crucial topics like Hydroclimatic modelling, Green economy and climate risk finance, Climate change and development (to be taught in the first semester), and climate-resilient WASH, gender and climate change, as well as renewable and green energy (scheduled for the second semester). In addition to a dedicated gender and climate change module, the diploma course incorporated gender as a cross-cutting consideration across all modules. This state-of-the-art diploma course ensured a well-rounded and in-depth exploration of key aspects related to climate change and takes into account the global, Asian, and local contexts, providing graduates with a robust understanding of diverse and critical subjects within the field.

As part of ensuring the sustainability of the climate change diploma course plan, CWC aimed to integrate these diploma courses into the MS-level degree program. These courses, comprising 18 credit hours, had already received approval from the academic council of IM Sciences. CWC worked diligently to embed the diploma courses into the curriculum, ensuring that future youth and climate change professionals could benefit from this specialized training as part of their advanced studies. This integration was seen as a critical step in maintaining the long-term impact and relevance of the climate change education initiative, fostering a new generation of experts equipped to tackle climate challenges.

” Learning about the changing climate and its impact on my homeland, Afghanistan, sparked a deep concern within me. This diploma in climate change is a stepping stone towards my goal of becoming a climate ambassador. Starting with zero knowledge, each topic became a new skill. I now grasp climate risk finances, data retrieval, and hydro-climatic modeling. The course transformed my behavior, from proper waste disposal to a shift from non-veg to veg, aligning my actions with a sustainable vision. With newfound skills, I am ready to champion climate change in my country (Afghanistan).” Says Sadeeq Ur Rehman Safi, Volunteer at Hawk Youth Vision Foundation (Afghan National).

A skilled workforce committed to combating climate change was developed through the participation of 54 government officials and young graduates. Of these, 30 were government officials, including 6 women, and 24 were graduates, including 7 women, who were active in the development sector and part of the university alumni. This initiative aimed to equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively address the complex challenges posed by climate change. The inclusion of women underscored the program’s commitment to gender diversity, fostering an inclusive approach to building climate resilience.
