IN SUPPORT OF BIOENERGY PROJECT DEVELOPERS IN VIET NAM

In the last quarter of 2020 and early 2021, GIZ Energy Support Programme hosted a series of events to support bioenergy project developers in Viet Nam.

First, online based

ESP successfully hosted a series of matchmaking events on setting up power plants using woody biomass in Viet Nam on November 4 and 11, 2020.

This is the first event of its type, where GIZ ESP provided simultaneous translation and facilitation to spur conversations between local companies and international ones on 1-to-1 basis. Participants were paired with each other for 20-minute discussions, allowing them to further connect on shared interests and pave the way for future collaboration. Before this, they had the chance to introduce their corporate profiles, past and on-going projects, and main criteria in selecting partners for biomass development in Viet Nam.

After the event, participants expressed their satisfaction at being matched with high-potential future partners, who share interests and deep insights into the market and are ready to cooperate. This was a surprise for many of them given that the market in Viet Nam is not fully fledged, and these companies asked GIZ to organize similar events in the future.

Then, face-to-face matchmaking

7 biomass suppliers and biomass boiler producers directly interacted with 20 textiles and footwear companies in another matchmaking event co-organised by GIZ and partners.

In the format of a small fair held simultaneously with a workshop, the event allowed participating companies to showcase their products as well as corporate profile, while also able to listen to presentations sharing about biomass business and technology.

This event was set to bring about an insightful look into the market and laid the foundation for long-term fuel transitions in the garment industry, at the same time tightened the links amongst companies to strengthen knowledge and technology exchange.

Tangible guidelines for project development

To keep investors/developers posted with the changes in policies, GIZ is also supporting the Government of Viet Nam to update the ‘Biomass energy project development Viet Nam guideline’ handbook, which was firstly introduced in 2017. An event to collect stakeholder comments on the updated draft was held on Jan 14, 2021.

The guidelines walked developers through administrative procedures and processes in developing grid-connected biomass power projects, from the development, implementation, operation and maintenance to the decommissioning. The guideline presents clear and comprehensive information that is expected to act as a foundation to assist investors in reducing risks before and during project implementation.

These series of events were part of the Climate Protection through Sustainable Bioenergy Markets in Viet Nam (BEM) project, implemented by GIZ and the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (EREA) under Viet Nam Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT). The project is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
