A Strong Message in Art: Check out the winning masterpiece by 10 year old Unnati Chaurasiya

On World Environment day, the winners of a month-long online art competition were announced; theme Role of citizens and bulk-generators of waste in waste management in tourist cities.

Organised exclusively for the students of Varanasi city, the competition is a joint initiative by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation, GIZ India and Karo Sambhav. Commencing on 22nd April, 2021, World Earth Day, the competition aimed at encouraging students to creatively engage in depicting sustainable waste management practices. Ms. Unnati Chaurasiya from Arya Mahila Nagarmal Murarka Model School, Varanasi won the first prize; awarded e-vouchers of INR 5000 and Certificate of Excellence. Out of 48 submissions received, we have 1 winner and 8 runners-up whose artworks will be featured during citizen awareness campaigns in the city!

This competition also marks the launch of DPPP project on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) with private partner Karo Sambhav; developing sustainable waste collectionsystems, a recycling platform as well as awareness generation amongst 100,000 stakeholders on e-waste and plastic recycling in Varanasi.

To mark the World Environment Day celebrations, a webinar was also conducted on the same theme, attended by leading experts from government and private organisations in tourism and waste management sector. Panel discussions and keynote address centered around central, state and district level initiatives in India – mainstreamingsustainability in tourism policies and programmes, in-situ waste management, operational costs of waste processing facilities, data automation, technology benefits and inclusion of informal sector, among others. The project aims at transformative solutions in the city’s waste management processes via active participation from its citizens.
