The Pollution Control Department (PCD), in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) under MA-RE-DESIGN project, organized a workshop on Thailand’s involvement in the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution (HAC). Over 40 participants from government, private sector, academia, and non-profit organizations.
The High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution (HAC) is an international coalition as outlined in United Nations General Assembly Resolution 5/14 titled “End plastic pollution: Towards an international legally binding instrument”. This is currently under discussion by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to formulate legally binding measures among countries to address plastic pollution.
In the workshop, experts presented Thailand’s Phase 2 Plastic Waste Management Action Plan (2023-2027) and aligned it with the HAC’s 7 key deliverables including for example, eliminating problematic plastics, developing global sustainability criteria and standards for plastics, and more.
Participants acknowledged that Thailand’s measures align with the HAC’s key deliverables, However, the attendees expressed concerns and provided recommendations to the PCD for consideration prior to joining the HAC. The PCD will analyze the data from the meeting and present it to the Pollution Control Committee and the National Environment Committee to guide Thailand’s future participation in the HAC.
